What is Pranayama?

Basically it is the practice of breath regulation (controlled breathing), which can help calm the nervous system.

Depending on the author or text, will depend on the definition:

Prana= life force, energy, breath

yama= extension, expansion, control

Most modern yoga practices synchronsie the breath with movement (asanas), but you can do pranayama at any time, in any place (no active wear required).

A simple pranayama technique is square breathing: Breathe in through the nose for a count of four seconds, hold for four seconds, breath out through the mouth for a count of four and hold for four seconds, then start all over again. You can do as many rounds (or squares as you like).
